Caledonian MacBrayne is proud to have achieved ‘Predator Free Certification’ in association with Biosecurity Scotland. This voluntary qualification applies to some of our ports and vessels travelling to islands with important seabird populations. The certification and all the activities it involves, helps us to fulfil our collective responsibility to protect these internationally renowned colonies.

Scotland’s seabirds are internationally important and globally renowned. We know that they are under increasing pressure from issues which include a reduction in their food supply, warming temperatures and avian flu. Non-native predators on the islands pose an additional threat. Seabirds are particularly open to risks posted by predators like mice, rats, stoats and mink. These can accidentally be transported to the islands – where if not prevented, they could feed on eggs, chicks and the birds themselves. As the UK’s largest ferry operator, we understand we have a unique role to play in protecting the waters and the environment where we are fortunate to sail. Achieving predator free certification on our relevant vessels and routes helps us to fulfil our responsibility to help protect Scotland’s seabirds.
If you are travelling with us to or from ports such as Oban, Coll, Colonsay, Tiree, or Mallaig to locations including Rum, Eigg, Canna and Muck – the seabirds will benefit greatly from your help and awareness.
Please:
If travelling with trailers, cargo or commercial goods, please:
Our staff on routes to the Small Isles are fully trained in this certification and will be carrying out their own tasks – and they are ready to help you should you need it.
