Plans for second closure of Uig Harbour

Uig Harbour

The Highland Council will temporarily close Uig Harbour from 30 October - 11 December 2023 for the planned second round of infrastructure upgrades. Full details of temporary alternative service arrangements have been made available to support affected customers.

During this time, the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy service will be unavailable and instead a service continuity plan will be in place, which will see:

  • One return sailing each day will operate between Ullapool-Lochmaddy, with an extended passage time of 4h 30m.
  • There will be no service between Ullapool-Tarbert and Tarbert traffic will be redirected to Ullapool-Stornoway.
  • Sailings between Lochboisdale-Mallaig/Oban will increase with one return sailing between 30 October – 5 November and 30 November – 11 December, six days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday) and two return sailings on a Saturday.
  • An additional daily return sailing, Monday - Saturday, will operate between Berneray and Leverburgh on a request basis during this period, departing 10:35 from Berneray and 11:45 from Leverburgh. This sailing will operate on a request basis to cater to demand.
  • Shuttle buses will transport passengers between Tarbert-Stornoway/Uig-Ullapool where required.

Customers who would normally travel Tarbert/Lochmaddy-Uig, but are diverted to Stornoway-Ullapool, or Lochboisdale-Oban/Mallaig will be eligible for a refund for the difference in ticket price.

Customers who would normally travel Lochmaddy-Uig, and who were subsequently diverted from Lochmaddy-Ullapool to Lochboisdale-Mallaig/Oban will also be eligible for a refund for the difference in ticket price. The refund form will be published on our website from 30 October 2023.

Any customers travelling Lochmaddy-Ullapool instead of Lochmaddy-Uig will be paying the same fare as their normal route so are not required to complete this form.

Our Tarbert and Uig Port Offices will remain open during the closure, however, they will be operating reduced hours. Full details of opening hours can be found in our FAQs within the dedicated web pages.

The upgrades will deliver many improvements, but we recognise that the closure of a port will be challenging for our customers. We have carefully planned alternative timetables so that a high level of service can be maintained, and so that disruption is kept to a minimum.
