CalMac welcomes latest seafarers as modern apprentices graduate

The next fleet of talented seafarers have joined CalMac following the official graduation of the ferry operator’s former modern apprentices.

The group, comprising seven Deck Rating Trainees and seven Engine Rating Trainees, began their training in September 2024 before recently moving into permanent positions across the network.

Their graduation strengthens CalMac's skilled workforce and highlights the success of a programme that has become a key route into maritime careers. Including the latest graduates, 138 former apprentices are now employed by CalMac, representing almost 80% of the 174 apprentices who have completed the programme.

The apprentices completed a structured training programme combining classroom learning with practical sea-going experience. The programme included academic phases at City of Glasgow College alongside placements on vessels across the CalMac fleet, allowing trainees to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required for life at sea.
